I don’t understand the backlash against this being a US only rollout. They are an American company doing a small test on American soil. It is not yet time for them to do some big international test. Its a beta test, people. It is, by definition, a small test of unfinished software. Cut them some slack! I mean, you would prefer this over them doing a worldwide test of potentially buggy software…wouldn’t you?

The nature of this type of network security product means it really has to live inside the switching layer, not at the gateway like a firewall.

The firewall technology you see in Smoothwall and PFsense was commercialized in the 90’s, and it took many years for open source to catch up. There is one open source alternative called Packetfence but it is very complex and not as slick as Napera.

I’ve heard great things about this, I’d love to have software like this, are there any alternatives? Possibly something I could run On a gateway server? or on a vm to test, I’ve played with Smoothwall, and PFsense, but I have nothing internally, and the authentication would be nice too. Even if it isn’t so shiny, anyone know of something?

Excellent post. We need this technology badly.
Considering that most network security threats come from outside the US, it is appropriate that the testing of this device starts at home — I hope that if it is successful, it will stay that way.
