A great and I must add comprehesible post. Steve, your writing here seems to mirror your current iteration of the Gillmor Gang. Sometimes you want to step back and contemplate the totalitarian concepts of the universe, the pull of gravity, the butterfly effect and other times you just want to be tossed about in the surf.

Excellent post, very apt.

An interesting parallel can be drawn between your observations on software trending towards updates and Arrington's position on traditional journalism moving to process journalism

Love the Notes mention.

The interesting thing is that I think we're seeing more community development that adds to this "delta" effect.

Sure, I can say that IBM releases new updates frequently compared to competition, and I'd be right. However, the community takes that a step further and builds on what was released to generate a nearly endless stream of new content/apps.

Take the iPhone or even Palm's Pre. There is a more or less open development arena there that not only moves us away from packaged software per se, but applications from sources able to produce new material at a far faster rate than corporate interests are often able.

We've always been thirsty for information, and today's no different. The tools are evolving to create a mux of communication we've never seen before.

Discovery indeed. It is a rather exciting time in that respect.

I wonder how much of this delta flow we actually perceive. Most applications change so often and in such small measure that we barely notice them. And as the rate of change goes up we probably hit a point when the change has to be significant to be noticed, something like Webber's law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weber-Fechner_law
