Frankly, I can't see the point of twitter, facebook etc. For the average joe who uses these so-called services, exactly what benefits does he stand to gain? I think most people who live in the real world are more concerned with how to pay off the next mortgage bill or how to keep his current job than twiting. Maybe kids who don't have to support themselves and don't know what to do with their lives can afford to waste time on these web sites, but for an adult with family responsibilities, these services are just background noises?

[...] TechCrunch IT: The Realtime News Network "For months we’ve been experimenting with realtime streaming, realtime chatting, realtime aggregation, realtime filtering. Not everything is in place, but enough for those who see no choice but to engage with the speed of the times. It’s scary to watch how powerful these tools are, what potential they have for misuse or worse. The communities that are forming around realtime technology need to accept both the promise and the threat of this moment. In a realtime world we all live in glass houses, and it’s our job to take care of the garden as if it was our own. Which it is." (tags: twitter friendfeed realtimeweb) [...]

http://www.twitter.com/breakingnews is one of the better breaking news and real time services on Twitter. I know from first hand that if you reply to them using @breakingnews with your tip they'll see it and investigate.

The question is not when we will transcend to the real time feed - it is happening now, but how the human conscience is going to adapt or reject the real time feed. I can see in people who have grown up in the IM/facebook world the filters and scrims they view the world and how the world views them. I am reminded of that scene in Waterworld (yeah, yeah, yeah) where Costner sets foot on land and is accosted by the cacophony of noise on land as opposed to his existence on water and finds he must leave the promised "land" and head back to sea. How many of us will be heading back to sea with this revolution?

I wouldnt wonder if realtime video blogging will soon replace/enhance twitter. Some people might even stream live 24/7. The question is then how this information can be conditioned. Maybe by aggregating the most interesting content like it is done in a big brother late evening review...

I found it particularly poignant when a correspondent covering the Iranian protests noted she was showing a video that "hadn't event hit the internet yet".

However, although the tools available to the "great unwashed" blogosphere and news will continue to converge, I don't think that will make the two groups indistinguishable. Big networks have the authority. New news outlets, "bloggers", are having to earn it.

The "real time" web has simply made it easier for stories to bubble up the chain. Everyone is a potential source.
